Looking at Light

Experiment with point directional light sources, dappled light, window light and diffused high key or low key. Try using different light sources.

Monochrome Weekend - Exercises in Composition (6)

Contradicting the principles - This one is definitely positive/negative space and possibly edge of frame. I also really like the shadows. (F5, 1/80, 92 mm, ISO 200)

Sky Watch Friday

I understand that the low cloud is smoke from fireworks (which I must just have missed).

Exercises in Composition (5)

Contradicting the principles - Select one subject and using a shallow depth of field vary the point of focus on that subject and take a number of pictures at these various settings. (F6.3, 1/200, 250mm, ISO 200). Not a macro lens so the focus is just a little off.

Exercises in Composition (4)

Contradicting the principles - Take the ordinary, familiar and commonplace objects from your environment and stretch their visual representation. Here the aim is to make photographs that do not immediately answer the question "what is it". Concentrate on framing, positive/negative space and camera controls (think that is closest to this one, although basically I just liked the geometry). (F6.3, 1/125, 250mm, ISO 200).

Exercises in Compostion (3)

Contradicting the principles - Select one subject and using a shallow depth of field vary the point of focus on that subject and take a number of pictures at these various settings. (F1.8, 1/1600, 50 mm, ISO 200)

Exercises in Composition (2)

Composition - The aim of this exercise is to explore the way the frame of the camera isolates your subject in the viewfinder and to increase your awareness of the frame and the choices you make that affect composition. Use only outdoor natural light. Choose one medium sized inanimate object with an interesting shape and make use of the following compositional elements: rule of thirds, angle/point of view, dynamic diagonal/diminishing perspective, graphic shapes/elements, balance/counterpoint, curves/rhythm, edge of frame, contrast of tones or subjects, selective focus/depth of field, pattern/texture, size and scale. This one is probably dynamic diagonal, size and scale, texture and hopefully rule of thirds.

Monochrome Weekend - Exercises in Composition

Wasn't trying to do anything in particular here except fill the frame, just something I saw that I liked, bit of a grab shot. (F6.3, 1/100, 250 mm, ISO 200)

The things you see

For some reason I don't pretend to understand, these youngsters are dressed as their favourite characters from a Japanese comic book series. I came across them in the Botanic Gardens. They seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Half a Marathon

Why anyone would do this to themselves on a sunny, autumn Sunday morning is beyond me. These people seem to be holding up okay as they near the end of the Sydney Half Marathon. Quite a few others needed the assistance of the St John's Ambulance.

Sydney Harbour YHA

A couple of weeks ago I showed you the exterior, common area and surrounding dig site at the new Sydney Harbour YHA. At that time I couldn't get on to the roof (residents only). Last Friday I met some friends from interstate who were staying there and not only went up to the roof but had a good sticky beak at the rooms - just about the best value you can get in Sydney for a double ensuite (with hairdryer and tea/coffee/jug). It may be a hostel but its better than a lot of hotels I've stayed in. Then there's that view.

She's Back

Somewhere in this melee is the small, pink yacht of young Jessica Watson, the youngest person to sail solo non-stop and unassisted around the World. The photo was taken from the rooftop beer garden of the Glenmore Hotel in the Rocks where several Sydney, and two Brisbane bloggers met for a very pleasant lunch. At the time the lunch was arranged (thank you Julie) we had no idea we would have this spectacle to watch. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be amongst the crowd waiting on the steps of the Opera House - she was due at about 11.30am and finally arrived at something like 3pm.

Weekend Reflections

I took this one for the number plate. It wasn't until later that I realised that I had a reflection as well.

Sydney Town Hall - Interior (4)

The lower Town Hall has now been turned into an accessible multipurpose venue, including an exhibition space for the City's treasures and historic artifacts.

The Vault, once a fireproof room for Council's archives and records, is now a meeting room furnished with restored cedar furniture from the original Council chamber.

Sydney Town Hall - Interior (3)

Paintwork has been redone in the Victorian style and when the floor covering of the council chamber was removed they uncovered the original parquet floor, now beautifully restored.

Sydney Town Hall has recently been refurbished and restored as part of a major fire safety and essential services upgrade. This week's photos were taken during the open weekend a little while back.
