Occupy Sydney - Week 2

After their forced, and forceful, removal from Martin Place at dawn on the Sunday, Monday morning saw a lone protester. That afternoon a small group had gathered. There were small groups at various times during the week but on some days a very visible police presence and no protesters.

Deconstructing Ways, Isidro Blasco

‘Deconstructing Ways’ creates a parallel world for your imagination to step into. At the intersection of Mullins Street and Market Row another option to the usual route appears – distorted but strangely more real than the street you are standing on. For a second or two you will be surprised that your own image is not actually reflected in that new street – or is it?

Peri(pheral)scopes: Looking-over to the over-looked by Heidi Axelsen, Hugo Moline and Adriano Pupilli

Rogue ductwork is grafted onto the air-con shafts and drainpipes of Skittle Lane to become peri(pheral)scopes: giant optical devices looking out to Sydney’s western edge. The views presented are glimpses of places as only locals know them.

Yarnbombing, guerrilla knitting, or yarnstorming – call it what you will. Queen and founder of the knit graffiti movement Magda Sayeg employs a handmade aesthetic to Sussex Lane, infusing a warmth and humanity to a landscape of concrete and steel.

Occupy Sydney

This past week, on the way to and from work, I walked through the Occupy Sydney protest in Martin Place, set up between the Reserve Bank and Westpac Bank. Here is a series of shots taken during the week. I had no problems with them being there - they were peaceful, friendly, made an effort to keep their area clean and tidy and were causing no harm. They initially pitched tents but the police removed these as it was against council regulations. From what I could see the police presence was visible but pretty relaxed. As the week progressed the group became better organised with a roster board and discussion groups. Police removed the protesters last night with varying reports of the force used to do so.

Walk on the Grass

Not altogether sure why a large patch of Martin Place was turfed. I think it was an advertising campaign for a lawn food.

Sulphur Crested Vandals

No idea why but there's a big flock of sulpher crested cockatoos around my area at the moment. I wondered why the bottle brushes were dropping their flowers all of a sudden until I saw the culprits.

They also did a fine job digging up someones newly laid turf.

Art and About - Acts of Kindness

For the 24th Kaldor Public Art Project in partnership with Art & About, Michael Landy has created a major new work Acts of Kindness, for Sydney.

Acts of Kindness investigates the meaning of kindness in today’s fast-paced world, focusing on the simple everyday gestures of compassion and generosity that occur throughout the city streets and often go unnoticed. Stories of kindness have been collected from people across Sydney to form the basis for Landy’s ambitious new artwork. Visit lower Martin Placeto see Landy’s 13-metre installation, mapping the Sydney CBD and indicating where the 200 stories of kindness have been placed throughout the city streets.
