Royal Far West

The Royal Far West Childrens' Health Scheme was established in 1924 by the Reverend Stanley Drummond after he realised that many children in the far west of New South Wales had never been on a holiday or seen the sea or a green landscape.

Children were brought from remote rural areas to the coastal suburb of Manly to enjoy a beachside holiday. Later, medical treatment was provided for children in poor health. Over the years the Scheme has expanded  to provide thousands of country children who have nonacute developmental, behavioural, learning, emotional and mental health disorders and limited access to local services with integrated clinical and educational care.

QVB After Hours

I've seen Japanese couples having wedding photos taken in Botanic Gardens and occasionally Hyde Park but it seems that the Queen Victoria Building in the evening after the shops shut is also popular.

Taphophile Tragics

Highgate Cemetery, London. - Karl Marx

The difference between shooting film and digital. I only have these 3 shots of Highgate Cemetery. Now I'd take at least 50. Whether I did take more and they were dreadful (these aren't good as evidenced by the sun flare in Karl Marx which I couldn't completely edit out, and the glare on the white marble) or I really did only take 3, I don't know.

City of Sydney Library

The scale model of Sydney CBD set into the floor of the City of Sydney Library was proving fascinating for the kids.

Monochrome Weekend

I would liked to have moved the plastic bag but that would have woken him and defeated the purpose of the shot.

Art modern

These fall into the category of  "I don't understand modern art."

Art Deco

The original part of the Museum of Contemporary Art occupies the former Maritime Services Building at Circular Quay. There doesn't seem to be a lot of its Maritime History remaining however there is still the original Boardroom, now an exhibition room.

Neolithic barrows near Stonehenge

Barrows are Neolithic burial mounds. These ones are part of the Stonehenge Cursus situated next to Stonehenge in Wiltshire. I think this photo was taken from the road. The barrows are the raised mounds  running across the centre of the shot.

A man's best friend

This is Willow, who was helping David carry the groceries home. I don't think the dog is blind in one eye but David didn't have time to explain the eye colour.

Taphophile Tragics

These were taken at Lakemba Mosque Open Day last year. People were sitting and standing around listening to the talk when a child's coffin was wheeled in and left at the back. Noone paid any attention to it except that the speaker was asked to hurry up so the ceremony could be held. After the regular prayers finished the coffin was moved to a more central position, the family came in and a very brief ceremony was held. Still with all the visitors in the mosque. Its something I felt very uncomfortable with. To me a funeral is (unless its of a well known person), if not private, at least for family and those who knew the deceased. I know that its imperative that the body is buried within a short period of time but it seemed disrespectful and that little coffin sitting at the back on its own was so terribly sad.

Water police at Manly. First time I've seen this type of police boat.

The big end of town (both in terms of money and building height) seen from the harbour.

Taphophile Tragics

A couple of very old (1979) shots of Red Square and Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow. Its that squarish redish building on the left above and on the right below. We didn't have time to queue to go in. See the bride and groom making a visit in the shot below. Apologies for the dreadful quality of the scans, they were taken on a little Kodak Instamatic that someone lent me after my good camera was stolen at Delphi in Greece.

Taphophile Tragics

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC honors federal, state and local law enforcers for their dedication and sacrifice. The memorial features bronze sculptures depicting a series of adult lions protecting its cubs, symbolizing the protective role of law enforcement officers. Blue-gray marble walls are inscribed with the names of more than 17,500 officers who have been killed in the line of duty (dating back to 1792). Each May, during National Police Week new names of fallen officers are added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

Below is the  highly polished, black granite police memorial in the Domain in Sydney.
