Clothes optional

I was only passing by on the photography walk to South Head - honestly. It's too cold to swim anyway, with our without clothes.

Sign of the times

That's right. Our last local bank recently closed due to "safety and security issues for customers and staff". Those of us who work in town, bank in town, but local pensioners who relied on this branch now have to travel at least two suburbs away to do their banking. Wonderful, isn't it.

Update: This morning (Tuesday) there was a new sign on the door - "Pension Thursday, shuttle bus to Rockdale."

One for the little man

When Sydney City Council shut Wayne down, admittedly due to unpaid rent, loyal customers rallied and prevailed. We just hope he can keep on top of things in the future. Having your stall in front of the Supreme Court and close to lots of legal chambers wouldn't have hurt either. He even made the Sydney Morning Herald. It was good to see that this cold, hard city can still have heart.

This is one of my favourites from last weekends walk. Taken at Camp Cove.

South Head

This week's photos are from a photography walk I did last weekend to South Head. I was getting used to my super wide lens and also played for the first time with a set of GND filters at sunset - with mixed results. Need to do a lot more practice with these.

A cruel land

Last week the harsh heart of this country claimed three of the best. ABC reporter Paul Lockyer, cameraman John Bean and chopper pilot Garry Ticehurst. Men who loved their work, were extraordinarily good at what they did and loved the area that claimed their lives - Lake Eyre in the remote north of South Australia. It was their documentary on water returning to the lake that prompted me to visit the area last year. May they rest in peace.

Archibald and Mary

Been a while since I featured the Archibald Fountain, seen here with St Mary's Cathedral as a backdrop, so here's a recent one taken on a Sydney midwinter's day.

The Sublime and the Ridiculous

Centrepoint Tower looked a lot better before they stuck big red lettering on it.

Barracks in Blue

I don't know why the Barracks Museum was blue but it certainly looked good.

St Marys

You're not allowed to take photos inside St Mary's. I managed to sneak this one in using the little camera before a security guard told me off. Such a shame, its a beautiful cathedral and I'd love to show you more of it.

Sky Watch Friday

This will show you exactly where the ridiculous festival featured yesterday is situated.

Winterfest

This is Winterfest. A ridiculous, pseudo-European "festival" in which an ice scating rink, some food stalls and plastic trees are installed outside one of Sydney's major cathedrals. In a snowy European winter it would be wonderful. On a sunny, 24 degrees celsius, Sydney winter day, it lacks something - credibility perhaps.

The Bubble Man

It was beautiful, sunny, winter's day and the bubble man was entertaining the kids in Hyde Park.

Syria

These were taken a while ago but are most definitely still relevant.

What used to be

This beautiful fence is all that remains of what was once a large Victorian or Edwardian house. I've tried to find a photo of the original house, which I remember seeing and always liked, but have had no success.

The name now adorns a nondescript block of flats.

Sea Shepherd

Sea Shepherd's MV Bob Barker in its new livery. The ice strengthened, former Norwegian whaler was in town a few weeks ago and open for tours over a weekend when I happened to be in town.

Baby Chino

Met this cutie when I was killing time in a coffee shop between appointments. Unfortunately, I can't remember her name.

Theme Day - Postcard Worthy

Taken last year in Silverton, an abandoned mining town, now a bit of an artist's colony, outside of Broken Hill in the far west of New South Wales.
