Mail Bags

The morning post, ready for delivery. Soon the posties will load it into their red trolleys and deliver it to buildings in the area.

No Graffiti

Little graffiti cleaning truck in the city centre. You'll notice that it's left hand drive, presumably for ease of access. We drive on the left and our cars are right hand drive.

Barracks Cats (4)

Spice guarding the props used by school groups on their interactive visits to the Hyde Park Barracks museum. They get to dress up as convicts and a couple of the museum staff dress as overseers and yell at them as they move bricks and things around and do other work that the convicts would have done. Museum visits were nowhere near as much fun when I was a kid.

Sydney Heritage (4)

The Shakespeare Room of the State Library of NSW celebrates the 300th anniversary of the poet's death (1916), the room is richly embellished with Tudor motifs by woodcarver Charles Sherline, and features a plaster ceiling modelled on Cardinal Wolsey's closet at Hampton Court Palace. The Seven Ages of Man (As You Like It) are depicted in the stained glass windows. It is not ordinarily open to the public but may be hired as a meeting or function venue.

Commando seat

I walk past this seat frequently but, until now, had never really noticed it. Amazing how much more you notice when you have a camera in your bag and a daily photo blog.

World Ocean Day

In honour of World Ocean Day I bring you one of Australia's glorious beaches - Tallow Beach near Byron Bay on the north coast of NSW.

The concept of a "World Ocean Day" was first proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Although not yet officially designated by the United Nations, an increasing number of countries mark June 8th as an opportunity each year to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. The Ocean Project, working closely with the World Ocean Network each year, helps to coordinate events and activities with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools, businesses. Together with the World Ocean Network, they are also working to have the United Nations officially designate World Ocean Day as June 8th each year. Take time to do something good for our ocean: Sign the petition today.

Notoriety

This mural of Bob Marley is on the side of a building on the corner of Gray Street and Railway Parade in Kogarah. It is likely it was painted by street artist who lived in the house and was charged with attempted murder after a three hour siege and tripple shooting in July 2007.

Sydney Heritage (3)

One of the most interesting features of the Lands Department building is the dome above the small hexagonal room on the room. The dome was built as an observatory, although it was never used as such, and you can still see the fittings in the walls. It is reached by going through an office, up one set of stairs to the hexagonal room which was, and probably still is, used as a meeting room, then up another narrow staircase to the dome. The building is usually open to the public once a year as part of the Historic Houses Trust Sydney Open (this year Sunday, 2 November) which gives the public access to old and new buildings throughout the city. The tour of the Lands building included the observatory dome.

Sydney Heritage (2)

The Lands Department Building featured yesterday has niches around its exterior, each containing the statue of an explorer. This is Allan Cunningham, an English botanist and explorer who travelled within New South Wales in the 1820s collecting plants.

Sydney Heritage

This is the Lands Department Building, one of my favourite old Sydney sandstone buildings. It was designed by the Colonial Architect James Barnet, and was built in two stages. The first stage was between 1876-81, the second stage was between 1888-91. The large domed structures on the roof are now conference rooms. I was lucky enough to work in this building for several years and on more than one occasion I found myself watching the boats on the harbour and drifting away then realising that I had no idea what had been said for the last five minutes. Sadly, at the current time, the Department of Lands is no longer resident in this building.

Sydney once had many more of these beautiful old buildings, however many were lost to developers in the 1960s and early 1970s before the Builders Labourers Federation saved those remaining by imposing green bans. Over the next couple of days I'll highlight some of the features that make this building so special.

Theme Day - My corner local shop

My favourite Lebanese pizza shop. In the morning the local kids buy their breakfast zatar pizzas on the way to school and I often drop in on the way home to pick up a few pastries for a quick and easy dinner.

To see local shops around the world have a look at these participating daily photo blogs: Click'>http://www.citydailyphoto.com/portal/themes_archive.php?tid=15">Click here to view thumbnails for all
