Monochrome Weekend

This is the Lord Nelson Hotel in Sydney's Rocks, Australia's oldest licensed hotel, established in 1841 and home of Australia's oldest pub brewery. A damn fine place for a drink on a hot summer's night (or any time).

The micro brewery is at the back of the bar and can bee seen though glass windows. There are also a lot of interesting bits and pieces on the walls.

Come in Spinner

Two-up is a traditional Australian gambling game, involving a designated "Spinner" throwing two coins into the air. Players gamble on whether the coins will fall with both heads up, both tails up, or with one coin a head, and one a tail (known as 'Odds'). The only time it can be legally played in pubs and clubs is on Anzac Day, in memory of the troops who played it during World War I. Bets are laid then as the kip (the piece of wood on which the coins are balanced) is raised and the coins tossed in the air the crowd yells "Come in Spinner".

Molly's Corner

Its becoming harder and harder to find old pubs that still have character and have not been tarted up. This is one of the few that are left. The East Sydney Hotel opened in 1856,is a lovely old pub, renovated rather than restored, it has warmth and atmosphere.

It also has a darts board, pressed metal

ceiling, walls covered by old photos and posters, and a commemorative plaque above the corner seat of a former regular. A definite plus is that it has no pokies (poker machines) which is extremely rare these days.
