The Flying Kangaroo

I came across this sand sculpture advertisement outside Customs House at Circular Quay during the week.

Full flow

In wet weather the run off from the path above gives us our very own waterfall on the way to the station.

I knew him, Horatio

I was taken by this Bell Shakespeare poster in the theatre foyer at the Opera House.

Pop Up

There's a trend at the moment for "pop up" restaurants - temporary eateries set up in public spaces for a short time. This one is associated with the Master Chef TV show.

That was strange

I go away for a week and my template disappears and gets replaced by an old one that I've never used for this blog. Just spent ages trying to get it back to somewhere near how it used to be. Needs a bit more tinkering but that can come later.

Get Reading

I had no idea that 2012 was the National Year of Reading until I saw this display in the foyer of Kogarah library. As the website says:

Nearly half the population struggles without the literacy skills to meet the most basic demands of everyday life and work. There are 46% of Australians who can't read newspapers; follow a recipe; make sense of timetables, or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle. Australian libraries and library associations are behind a campaign to turn 2012 into the National Year of Reading, linking together all the great things that are already happening around books, reading and literacy, and giving them an extra boost, with inspirational programs and events taking place across the country. Libraries will be partnering with government, the media, writers, schools, publishers, booksellers, employers, child care providers, health professionals and a whole host of other organisations that share our passion for reading.

Sign of the times

That's right. Our last local bank recently closed due to "safety and security issues for customers and staff". Those of us who work in town, bank in town, but local pensioners who relied on this branch now have to travel at least two suburbs away to do their banking. Wonderful, isn't it.

Update: This morning (Tuesday) there was a new sign on the door - "Pension Thursday, shuttle bus to Rockdale."

Rubbish to some

Decoration to the garbage man, or garbo in the local parlance.

Go Slow

Look what I found when I got home from work last Monday. I knew they were putting a sign in the street but I didn't know it was going to be right outside, or this big.

A plague on both their houses

Not much choice really, one's as bad as the other.
I did wonder whether the incumbent Prime Minister's poster hanging half off the fence was an omen. Turns out it was. Looks like we have a hung Parliament with neither party having a majority and it will be a while before we know which one will be able to form Government with the support of independents and minor parties. The Greens did well with up to 9 seats in the Senate (the Upper House) giving them control, and their first ever House of Representatives (Lower House) seat. Interesting times ahead.

Opinions needed

A few days back I posted that one of my shots had been selected for a competition. I now need to get it printed in large format. This one:

Dilemma - do I go for gloss or matt finish? I'm tending towards matt, I think that's what I printed it in for class but no longer have the print.

Opinions?

Chuffed

I found out during the week that this shot has made it into Sydney Community College's annual Student Photography Exhibition. Have to get it printed at A2 size (24 x 16 inch). Very confronting. No idea what the prizes are and the standard of competition is high so I'm not that hopeful but its very exciting - I've never been hung before.

New Toy

I've been getting increasingly dissatisfied with my baby Olympus p&s and have hardly used it for the last few months. Problem is, the DSLR is too heavy for every day use. So I've been thinking about replacing the p&s. Had been looking at the Canon G11 but, although its a terrific camera, its not handbag size and I couldn't see the point of getting it when I have an SLR. Then I started reading about the S90 which sounded very, very interesting - a pocket camera with full manual operation and the ability to shoot in raw. Its also a very good low light camera. Then I saw the magic word - SALE. I've had it for just over a week and so far I'm really happy with it. It doesn't have as big a zoom as the little Olympus but I can live with that. As an everyday handbag camera and a backup for the SLR its terrific. All this week's photos are taken with the S90 (except this one, of course).

I've also finally worked out how to put a border on a photo.

What the?

Another one of those intriguing posters which turned out to be advertising nothing more interesting than a buy and sell website.
