Its starting to look a lot like Christmas (3)

Its a Christmas tradition for David Jones, one of the city's remaining department stores, to decorate its windows in a Christmas theme. Its loved by kids and adults alike. This year however, you can tell that times are tough - only half the windows are decorated. This year's theme is Santa's workshop.

Really ... never heard of THAT before! One of the places on my list for this evening. My mother used to take me there in the early 50s. I have flashes in my memory ...

That's a nice photo and great display! I want a job creating things like that.

Sweet! These are the things we lack in Jewish Israel.

I'm never in Australia for the lead-up to Christmas so over the last month when I was there I caught up with all the decorations including the Myer windows which were lovely this year and yes they too weren't all done!!!

Ann, you will be talking about the windows along the Elizabeth St frontage: they have not been part of the montage for quite some years now. Generally, the story starts with the large plate glass window that angles across Pitt and Market and continues up Market and ends with the large plate glass that angles across Market and Elizabeth. All these were decorated for 2008.

However, in my opinion it was boring because it tried to be smart and update the captions. So instead of a line from a carol per window it tried to include the new emphasis on IT and computers in general.

Also there was no music ... no scratchy carols ... this was more a lack of imagination than a lack of money I suspect ...

I definitely remember more windows being decorated, though maybe its longer ago than I think - getting old.

I must admit I didn't read the captions, was more looking for something that would give me a half decent photo. Its cute but they have definitely had better years.

A lot of the decorations this year look a bit tacky, particularly those conical Christmas trees in Pitt Street Mall that look like they are made out of cardboard.

Interested to hear your comments. I designed the windows and created the scenes and sets in the 2006 Christmas windows. If forgotten you may view on my site. Search rgmstudiom which will show the scenes being made in my little tin shed workshop before being used in the David Jones display along with over sixty more that I also designed and made.
And yes David it is fun making them - unfortunately the business end is not so rewarding when others claim credit for your work. Its a cruel world - all about the big guys making money over the little people. Not the Christmas spirit they pertain to at all.
Sorry for the disillusion.
