It is a gorgeous colour and with what appear to be tongues of yellow.

Some sort of Canna Lilly do you think?

You're kidding, aren't you, I wouldn't have a clue and there was noone around to ask.

By the way, I was wrong about the cotoneaster. They aren't berries, they're flowers. It may be something like a New Zealand Christmas Tree, need to look at the new photos and check on google (or with mum).

I have an image of the spray of colour up close which I got on Saturday as I walked from Double Bay up through Rushcutters Bay to the films at Verona. It has a spray of flower and then at the end, this translucent little bubble things appears and drops off everywhere. I will email you the image which is on my home computer. Let's sleuth the blighter out!!

It's Costus barbatus and the bloom longs for a long time. The red cone gets taller as it blooms.
